"For me, it's fascinating. You see the buildings being built, you know what you've done. What more could you want?" (Pascal, 31, bricklayer from Ingelheim) Pascal is a passionate bricklayer. He appreciates the variety and the time spent in the fresh air, even if it can be uncomfortable and dirty at times. His tasks include everything from fastening steel beams, to formwork and concreting, to driving large construction vehicles - depending on what is needed at the time. Of course, sometimes he also does traditional bricklaying with bricks and mortar. His career choice came from his older brother, who works for the same company in Ingelheim. "He was always doing a little bit at home in our parents' house and I helped out. That interested me, you're physical, you're outside, I enjoy it and then I said: 'Okay, I'll do the apprenticeship too.'" Pascal is currently a foreman on smaller construction sites. His goal is to take on responsibility for larger projects later on. He definitely wants to stay in the construction industry. He also finds working with colleagues from different cultures enriching. "You get to know lots of other cultures, and it's also very important that we all work together." Pascal believes that the fact that there is still a shortage of skilled workers is partly due to the physically demanding work and time pressure. He also says that you shouldn't be "made of sugar" when it comes to bad weather or a harsh tone. There is a lot of noise, and you sometimes have to be loud when you don't mean it in a bad way. For Pascal, the job is exactly the right one. He started his apprenticeship when he was 16 and hasn't regretted it one bit since. "Where I am now is exactly what I want and what I want to do for as long as possible."
