The Berlin Wall was one of the most significant symbols of the Cold War, which separated West Berlin from East Berlin and East Germany from 1961 to 1989. Its purpose was to prevent the residents of the East side from fleeing to the West, where a better standard of living and freedom awaited. The background to the wall's construction was the economic and political crisis caused by the loss of population in East Germany. Over the years, the wall evolved into a complex barrier that included high concrete walls, electrified fences, minefields and control towers. An estimated 5,000–6,000 people crossed this dividing line by various means, although the attempts were dangerous and several of them ended tragically. The documented escape story tells about the brave attempt of Italian student Domenico Sesta and his friends to dig a tunnel under the wall to save his friend and his family living in East Berlin. Their project required considerable physical labor, technical ingenuity and great determination. The work involved many difficulties, such as the hardness of the soil, lack of oxygen and water leaks, but in the end it was possible to bring 29 people to safety in West Berlin through the tunnel. The story of this successful operation was documented and attracted worldwide attention, shedding light on the struggles of East Berliners and the reality of a city divided by the Wall. The fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 was a significant historical event that symbolized the breaking of the Iron Curtain and the end of communist rule in Eastern and Central Europe. The fall of the wall began with the growing discontent of East German citizens and led to a spontaneous and peaceful uprising. This led to German reunification in October 1990 and marked the end of the Cold War and the beginning of European integration.
