The Advanced Emergency Medical Center at Oita University Hospital is the only hospital in Oita Prefecture that operates a doctor helicopter. Doctor helicopters are the lifeblood of emergencies in Oita Prefecture, which is mountainous. They can arrive anywhere in the prefecture within 20 minutes. In the 11 years since it was first put into operation, it has been dispatched to nearly 5,000 cases, saving many lives. Emergency flight doctors and flight nurses appear on the doctor helicopter. To become a fully-fledged flight doctor, a total of five years of training, including initial and specialized training, is required to obtain a specialist qualification in emergency medicine.
