After suddenly leaving his bank, Jürgen Hilgers works as a financial advisor. Some people prefer to call him a "wealth squanderer". When he comes back from jogging one day, puts his clothes in the washing machine and enters the living room freshly showered, he finds his murdered wife there. The police, who he alerts, discover a crudely faked break-in and suspect that the traces of the crime are being covered up. They arrest Hilgers on suspicion of murder. His lawyer Dr. Franck is initially interested in the question of who could have an interest in killing the wealthy but inconspicuous Mrs. Hilgers and incriminating her husband. The first suspicion is directed against Hilgers' lover Karen Lehnert. As hot-blooded as she was at first to devour him, she attacked him with a knife in a furious manner when he wanted to break up. When Matula wants to check Karen Lehnert's somewhat contrived alibi, two more "interesting" people come into view. Her best friend Brigitte Steffens and an investor named Dr. Bauer, who was obviously seriously disappointed by Hilgers' services.
