Meeting with History: Mrs. Penelope, 91 Years Old, Unwinds the Thread of Memory In Karpenisi, we met Mrs. Penelope, 91 years old, with rich memories from the past. She told us about her life in the fields, where she worked with her parents since she was a child. Plowing was done with animals, sowing by hand, and the harvest was small, mostly corn and wheat, which filled the granaries to have food all year round. In addition to farming, her family also had livestock, goats and sheep. Mrs. Penelope remembers taking milk to hungry children who were about to starve to death. She told us about the civil war, where the rebels took her brother for 18 days, until he managed to escape. She also remembers her husband's wounding by the rebels, which left him crippled for the rest of his life. He described to us how people made clothes from animal hair as well as shoes from leather, and how the ancients knew better how to predict the weather. Today, Mrs. Penelope spends her time in her garden, producing her own food. She eats minimal meat, once a week, mostly vegetables from the garden and wine from her vineyard. The story of Mrs. Penelope is a testimony to the strength of the human spirit and its ability to adapt and survive in difficult circumstances.
