La Romieu (L'Arromiu in Gascon) is a French commune located in the north of the Gers department in the Occitanie region. Historically and culturally, the commune is in the Condomois, a former constituency of the province of Gascony with the title of county. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Petit Auvignon and various other small rivers. The commune has a remarkable natural heritage composed of two natural areas of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest. La Romieu is a rural commune with 555 inhabitants in 2021, after having experienced a population peak of 1,584 inhabitants in 1793. Its inhabitants are called Roméviens or Romévines. The name of this medieval ensemble, "l'Arroumîu", means "the pilgrim" (a "roumieu" originally designated a pilgrim to Rome, but the term has been applied to all pilgrims). The commune is a member of the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France. The architectural heritage of the commune includes three buildings protected as historical monuments: the collegiate church of Saint-Pierre, listed in 1901, the tower of Cardinal d'Aux, listed in 1928, and the castle of Madirac, registered in 1964.
