The country was to be Jewish and democratic. Jewish, because there should finally be a country in which Jews can live in safety. Democratic, because it wanted to be religiously and culturally open, including for Muslim and Christian Palestinians. Today, Israel is a high-tech nation that is in one of the greatest domestic political crises in its history.
