Documentary On (Saturday 11:40 p.m. KBS 1TV) “Mountain of Bones - Baekmagoji Remains Excavation Operation” (Aired on October 16, 2022) ■ 70 years of victory at Baekmagoji - The DMZ, where the scars of the Korean War remain intact, has opened. In April 2019, the leaders of the South and the North met and agreed to recover the remains of the Korean War victims sleeping in the DMZ in accordance with the mutual agreement (9.19 Agreement) based on peace. In 2021, in accordance with the 9.19 Agreement, the excavation of remains at Baekmagoji, the fiercest battleground of the Korean War, began following Arrowhead Hill in the DMZ. The Battle of Baekmagoji is recorded as one of the fiercest battles in the history of the Korean War. It was a battle that took place for 10 days from October 6 to October 15 in 1952, when the armistice agreement was in progress. The 9th Division of the Korean Army defeated 45,000 troops from 3 divisions of the Chinese Army and won. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Baekmagoji, we will broadcast the records of the 2-year Baekmagoji Remains Excavation Operation from 2021 to 2022. The Baekmagoji Remains Excavation was conducted over a period of 5 years, focusing on the fiercely contested battlefields of the Korean War, from Baekmagoji to Hwaranggoji. Since it was an excavation of remains in the Demilitarized Zone where the Military Demarcation Line meets North Korea, numerous variables were taken into consideration when conducting the excavation. ■ Scars of the Korean War - The Korean War was a global war in which the UN and China participated. 15,000 Chinese soldiers and 3,500 Korean soldiers died at Hill 395 (Baekmagoji). Many of them still remain as remains at Baekmagoji. Our government is excavating their remains and returning them to China through humanitarian measures and the great principle of peaceful cooperation. In Arrowhead Hill, 143 remains were excavated over the past three years, and 88 of them, confirmed to be Chinese soldiers, were repatriated to China this year. Ambassador Xing Haiming of China to South Korea expressed his gratitude to the South Korean government for its efforts to excavate the remains of Chinese soldiers at Incheon Airport, where the remains were repatriated, and expressed his expectations and cooperation for future excavations. Remains of UN member countries other than South Korean and Chinese soldiers are repatriated or buried in a cemetery in consultation with the Ministry of National Defense according to each country's burial customs. In 2021, our government repatriated five presumed remains of US soldiers to the United States, and the United States returned approximately 60 remains of South Korean soldiers excavated in North Korea and China. ■ Baekma Hill Excavation - Excavation of vivid records of war. The DMZ, an area that has been preserved as it was during the war, untouched by human hands for 70 years. There, vivid traces of war are buried. The most important task in excavating remains is the removal of explosives. It is recorded that 300,000 shells were fired at Baekma Hill by both the enemy and our forces. The hill collapsed, the ground was turned upside down, and the pure white dust that was created was enough to give it the name 'Baekma Hill'. A considerable number of misfires and unused bullets were found on Baekma Hill. When the mine detectors of the engineering corps find explosives, the explosive ordnance disposal team (EOD) is dispatched to remove them. Some explosives are relatively safe because they have corroded a lot, but some are still well-preserved enough to be used right away, so safety measures are essential. The EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team) that collected the explosives detonates them after all dangers such as forest fires have been completely eliminated. ■ Baekma Hill Revisited! - Veterans who fought in the Battle of Baekma Hill 70 years ago on that unforgettable day came to visit the hill. Although they were over 90 years old, they climbed the steep hill with the determination to return to Baekma Hill and stood before the remains of their comrades. My military number is still vivid in my memory even in the hazy memories of time. That military number contained the memories of life that my comrades who climbed the hill with me and died together with me. For me, for the country, I couldn’t take my eyes off the comrades who had gone before me. And veteran Lee Seung-cho, who was a sergeant first class during the Korean War, called out the names of his comrades who were still on the hill and had not returned. “In front of those names, we won. We protected this land. You won.” The 70-year wait to tell these words to the comrades who remained on Baekmagoji has ended. The veterans left Baekmagoji, greeted by new comrades who are guarding the path they had taken. ■ Baekmagoji Remains Excavation Operation – Until we find all the comrades sleeping in the DMZ The Baekmagoji Remains Excavation Operation, which began in 2021, has excavated 51 remains (as of July 2022) so far and is scheduled to continue for three more years. Of those, two remains excavated in 2021 were identified and returned to their families. The Korean War Remains Excavation Operation began with the spirit that all those who sacrificed themselves for the country must be remembered by the country. A country exists for its people and always puts its people first. The people of such a country sacrifice themselves without hesitation. The excavation operation will not stop until we find the last person who sacrificed himself to protect the Republic of Korea during the Korean War. #Baekmagoji #RemainsExcavation #Remains ※ [Documentary ON] Watch popular videos Korea's class, with all 12 of the world's largest ships fully loaded during the Korean War! • [Documentary ON] Korea's class, with all 12 of the world's largest ships fully loaded during the Korean War! • [Documentary ON] Korea's class, with all 12 of the world's largest ships fully loaded during the Korean War...
