From the distance, a small cart rattles towards you from the sea, a self-propelled cart with a four-stroke engine. Without the cart railway, the Hallig Oland would be cut off from the outside world, because ships can only dock there sporadically due to the shallow water. One of the most unusual railway lines in Germany runs on a rail embankment in North Friesland, from the mainland to the two Hallig islands Oland and Langeneß. The railway line actually belongs to coastal protection, but the Hallig residents have also taken over the route with their private carts. Whether food, drinks, letters & packages, spare parts, clothing, mattresses, furniture and even Christmas trees -- everything that is needed for life and living on the Hallig can be fetched with the cart railway.
