As part of its activities, UNESCO creates the World Heritage List, which includes places of exceptional value, both in historical, cultural and natural terms. These monuments are classified in various categories, which reflect their unique characteristics and significance. Currently, there are over 1,000 sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List around the world. UNESCO classifies the sites on its list into three main categories: cultural, natural and mixed. Each of them refers to a different aspect of heritage, emphasizing the diversity and richness of our common heritage. CULTURAL SITES Cultural sites are the largest category on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It includes sites that have exceptional historical, architectural, artistic or spiritual significance. These are often monuments associated with key moments in human history, representing different civilizations, religions and traditions. Examples of cultural sites include ancient ruins, religious architecture, urban complexes, and palaces and castles. NATURAL SITES Natural sites are areas of exceptional landscape, ecological or geological value. They are often national parks, nature reserves, mountains, forests, waterfalls and coral reefs, which are of invaluable value in terms of biological and geological diversity. Examples of natural sites include national parks, geological formations, biosphere reserves and marine ecosystems. MIXED SITES The category of mixed sites includes sites that combine cultural and natural values. These are places where human interaction with nature has created a unique landscape that has both historical and natural significance.
