Russia has launched a new offensive in the Russian border region of Kursk to drive Ukrainian troops out of there. Around 50,000 soldiers are said to be involved in the offensive, including several thousand North Korean soldiers. Putin's aim could be to bring the entire region back under control before the inauguration of the newly elected US President Trump on January 20. The background to this could be Trump's plans to bring about a ceasefire and a freeze on the war on the current front line. This could also be the reason why Russia is intensifying its attacks in the illegally annexed oblasts in eastern Ukraine. The outgoing Biden administration wants to intensify support for Ukraine until Trump's inauguration, said US Secretary of State Blinken at a meeting with NATO Secretary General Rutte in Brussels. What does the concentration of Russian soldiers in the Kursk region mean for Ukraine? What is the situation in the currently contested Ukrainian city of Kupiansk? How does Ukraine view Trump's inauguration?
