5 things to do to let go What does letting go mean? What are the steps needed to let go? Why let go? Letting go requires calm, openness and availability. Generally, letting go produces fear within us for something we do not know. Letting go also means making space. We would like something new, but we have no internal space, because we are attached to what we have. This is why we cannot let go. Everything that is no longer useful, functional, that is not good for us, that is cumbersome, only takes up space and it is essential to learn to let it go. It may happen that we tell ourselves that we cannot do it; but here our will comes into play: letting go requires an act of will on our part. What are the steps to learn to let go? 1) Recognize attachments: if we do not know what our attachments are, we do not know what to let go of; we feel the sensation of heaviness, dissatisfaction, weakness, we feel exhausted, but we do not know what it is that makes us feel that way. To track down our attachments, let's ask ourselves: what am I holding on to? What do I often think about? What does my mind automatically go to? What are the thoughts that automatically emerge during the day? 2) Track the advantage: We are made of parts, which part wants to let go? What are the other parts that don't want to let go? Many parts of us cling to someone or something, because each part sees in a certain way and the parts of us that don't want to let go see an advantage in not doing so. Let's ask ourselves, then, what are our advantages in not giving up? What advantage does holding on to the story, the person, the thought or the belief give me? Holding on gives us security and letting go requires responsibility, risk, fear and we always tend towards the benefit, towards what seems like a good thing for us. 3) Make space to welcome: the fear of letting go is fear of emptiness. By changing this vision, that is, if I let go I feel emptiness, we focus only on the lack of something, on the space to fill. And the void scares us: it remains a hole. Changing the language by saying "I make space", "I let go to make space, to welcome" makes us focus on the new, on welcoming the new. It completely changes the vision and perception of things. Let's ask ourselves: what is cumbersome inside me? What is useless today that I dedicate energy, thoughts to? 4) Learn to trust: we are afraid because we need to control. We cannot trust life. To let go it is necessary to make an act of faith, to feel trust. Do small things without having control of everything. 5) Accept and welcome: often the attachment to something or someone is because we cannot accept that it has passed, that something is over. We cannot accept that impermanence is a fundamental law of life: everything changes. How can you accept? Accepting is an act of will. Accepting is done by accepting. Accepting means being content, in the sense of being happy, of being happy with what is there. What are the resistances that keep you from letting go?
