In this 4x4 comparison test to the limit of the Toyota Land Cruiser Limited vs. Mercedes X-Class 350d Power, we put the top of the range of both models up against the most demanding 4x4 challenges. ERRORS: The Mercedes does have a central differential, which is only available in this V6 version. It is a permanent 4x4 system, just like in the Toyota. The central differential is open and includes a multi-disc clutch in the transfer case that allows gradual locking of up to 100%. This lock can work automatically (4MAT mode) reacting to traction losses or partially forced (4H and 4L modes) with a preload that anticipates slippage. The rear differential is manually lockable and the traction control contributes to wheel-to-wheel traction distribution. Both are pure off-roaders with a frame with a longitudinal member, a rigid rear axle and a reduction gear, as well as displacing a very similar mass. As the top-of-the-range models, they also have all the available electronic aids. The Toyota Land Cruiser has a traditional 4x4 body and has 7 seats, while the Mercedes has a completely different pick-up format, in which the priority is the ability to carry a lot of weight. The Mercedes is half a metre longer and has only 5 seats. The Toyota has a Torsen central and rear differential (LSD), with the central one being manually lockable. It has autonomous forward control (Crawl Control), terrain selector and obviously also traction control. This comparison has been filmed on the Autorrescate 4x4 off-road circuit in Los Ángeles de San Rafael, which offers us a wide range of possibilities to take the capacity of both vehicles to the extreme. In this case, we have used the most complicated obstacles on the circuit. Both cars are standard, with standard tyres and the pressures recommended by the manufacturer, so this would be the car that would leave the dealership in both cases. Any assumptions we make about what would happen with other tires or in other conditions will be just that, an assumption, our goal is to test the car that you can actually buy, without touching it, to give you a real measure of what it is capable of. 4x4 Self-Rescue Off-Road Circuit: http://autorescate4x4.com/circuito-4x4/ Presented by: David G.
