The 420 series multiple units were originally intended for the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. The three-part electric multiple units were the first for S-Bahn traffic in alternating current networks. In the years that followed, the 420 series was also used in other regions such as Frankfurt/Main, Stuttgart and the Ruhr area.
