The beginning of 2025 will be characterized by a new fairly marked drop in temperatures and a new snowfall at low altitudes. For the rest, the month of January should not present any major particularities. The calm weather at the end of the year will end on January 1st with the return of rain and wind, then a clear cooling that could last a week. Snow will fall again at low altitudes. Week of December 30 to January 5, 2025: the return of disturbances From January 1st, an active disturbance will cross France from north to south, with rain and strong winds. Cold air will descend from the north and snow will fall at low altitudes on our reliefs, particularly in the northeast. Mistral and tramontane will rise in the southeast. This disturbed episode will be short-lived, giving way to dry and fairly cold weather for the first week of January. Week of January 6 to 12: dry and fairly cold weather After the rain and snow disturbance at the beginning of the month, the anticyclone is swelling again over France. With clear nights, it could freeze quite significantly, especially in the mountains where fresh snow will persist. In the plains, we will have to count on fogs that are sometimes freezing and the return of clear spells. Week of January 13 to 19: towards the return of disturbances to the north Reliability is very limited at this time. The most likely scenario is that anticyclonic conditions will continue until mid-January, with a gradual thaw. Then, oceanic disturbances should return in a milder west to southwest flow. These disturbances would first circulate north of the Loire, while beautiful mild and almost spring-like days could reign in the south. Week of January 20 to 25: rain and mildness For this period, the predominant scenario would be that of a disturbed ocean flow from the west, mild and humid, with wind and rainy passages. In this context, seasonal forecasts still envisage a mild January in France on a monthly scale, notwithstanding the first rather cold week. Precipitation would be in excess in the north-east quarter, and in deficit going towards the south-west and around the Mediterranean. This means that there would be less rain there than the statistical norms. Let us remember that the reliability remains limited on long-term forecasts, and that this trend is likely to change significantly with each new update. Update: every Thursday from 5 p.m.
