Divided into 5 acts, or songs, Auto da Catingueira tells of Dassanta's love for the tropeiro Chico das Chagas, a humble singer from the region who sings the customs of his land and his time. Each Canto speaks for itself: the 1st, Da Caatingueira, tells the birth of Dassanta. The 2nd, Dos Labutos, describes her work as a woman. The 3rd, Das Visage e das Latumia, parades the universe of the invisible and the haunted that inhabits the imagination of the caatinga. The 4th Canto, Do Pidido, reveals Dassanta's desires and vanities, as Chico leaves for the city; and Desafio (5th Canto and last) recreates the tragic dispute for his love between Chico against the rogue and experienced Cantador from the Northeast, knowledgeable in all the weapons of Cantoria styles. The musical dispute takes place at a party on a full moon night, and the balance between the contenders leads events to their ultimate consequences.
