The dune area in Oostvoorne consists of all kinds of small hills. These are the places where almost a hundred bunkers are hidden, which were part of an advanced air defense system of the Germans during the Second World War. One of those bunkers, the Biberbunker, has been partially redesigned. "The bunkers were in this enclave of the Luftwaffe", says Ton van der Hoeven of the Biberbunker. "This was very strictly secured. Heavy barbed wire, a strip of landmines and there was land surveillance. A total of about two hundred soldiers and officers of the Luftwaffe worked here." The bunker was used as a command point, to precisely map enemy aircraft and the Germans themselves using radar images. "This allowed them to intercept and shoot down a large number of bombers, so that they could prevent them from going to Germany." The Biberbunker is the only bunker of its kind that was not filled with sand or destroyed after the war. Three rooms in the bunker are furnished as they looked during the Second World War. "All the doors were made of steel at the time. Most of the doors have since disappeared, but they are still there." 1943 The rooms are furnished with beds and chairs. There is radio equipment on the tables. The walls of the various rooms in the bunker are also covered with wood. "We are completely restoring it to how it was in 1943." Dolls in the bunker add an extra dimension to the story. For example, in the former canteen there is a display case with pilot dolls. They wear original uniforms of American, English and German pilots. The bunker can be visited twice a week for guided tours. "A lot of people have no idea what happened here during the Second World War," says Ton. "I once wrote a piece that this is the best kept secret of Oostvoorne. And that is actually true: a lot of people do not know what really happened here." For six weeks, the reporters travel through the region during the RTV Rijnmond Summer Tour. This week, Voorne-Putten is highlighted on TV, radio, the website and social media. The stories and reports from these weeks can be found here.
