<Anchor> In order to reduce damage in such emergency situations, airports around the world are installing various safety facilities. These are devices that hold down the fuselage of an airplane that is quickly skidding on the runway. Special correspondent Kim Beom-ju reports from New York about an example in the United States. <Reporter> A small plane stops behind a passenger plane that is disembarking, raising a cloud of white dust. Soon, all five passengers disembark the plane without injury. This is thanks to the pre-installed IMASU system. IMASU is a method of installing a pavement block-like plate made of foam concrete that breaks upon impact at the end of the runway. When the plane overruns the runway, the concrete breaks like corn stalks and catches the wheels and fuselage, stopping it. In 2016, a plane carrying Vice Presidential candidate Mike Pence landed just 800m from the end of the runway at New York Airport, but it stopped thanks to the IMASU system. If the device had not stopped the plane at that time, the investigation found that it would have traveled 300 meters further and crashed onto the eight-lane highway. Since the 1990s, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration has recommended the IMASA system to airports that cannot secure a safety zone of 300 meters or more from the end of the runway. [Terry Sroka/Redding Airport Director: Because of the terrain and location, we could not secure a safety distance of 300 meters, so the FAA requested and funded the installation of the IMASA system.] Starting with New York in 1996, this facility has been installed at a total of 72 airports, and has prevented a total of 22 accidents over 27 years, saving 432 passengers. In Asia, some airports in Japan, China, and Taiwan have also installed it. However, we are only reviewing installation at the new Ulleungdo Airport, and have not introduced it anywhere yet.
