※ This video is part of <Extreme Job - Bell Craftsman, Parts 1 and 2> that aired in February 2013. A bell factory capable of producing bells weighing up to 50 tons. Here, the day begins in a heat that puts the harsh winter to shame. The entire process of making a bell, from designing the pattern to making a mold to pouring molten iron, is carried out with the craftsmen’s sincerity. Making a bell that is 3.3 meters tall and weighs 13 tons is more difficult than any other labor. First, all nine melting furnaces must be activated to produce 18 tons of molten iron. Boiling the hot molten iron for over five hours in front of the melting furnace that reaches a maximum temperature of 1,200 degrees Celsius and then gathering it all together requires a high level of concentration. The workshop, where 18 tons of molten iron is ready to be poured into the mold, is filled with tension... The work of pouring molten iron and dismantling the mold after it has dried for three days is truly hard labor. The temple bell with the mold weighs 31 tons. That's why construction equipment was mobilized, but unexpected situations keep occurring during the process of moving the bell. The work of dismantling the mold continues in the acrid sand and dust, and the pieces that have hardened between the patterns are individually polished. The process of making a temple bell is the same, but the reason why not a single temple bell makes the same sound is because it is done entirely by hand. The sound of the temple bell lasts for a thousand years.
