Can German industry cope with digitalization? https://media.ccc.de/v/38c3-was-macht... In this talk, I will draw a ruthless conclusion from my almost three years in the German industrial landscape. I will talk about catastrophic and seemingly insurmountable backlogs, about ridiculously high requirements for certifications, but also about great hopes, efforts and a perceived complete absence of the state and what that means. The talk deals with the struggle of a lonely administrator who is trying on his own to lead a site with almost 100 people in the heart of the Ruhr into the 21st century and somehow make it safe. We start with funny anecdotes about 20-year-old servers and DOS applications, shed some light on the questionable business of certifications and audits, and at the end of the journey we end up with the question of what the legislator is actually doing and what effects that has. It is a small appeal and guide to all administrators in the private sector on how they can convey to the board and their bosses a more responsible approach to data protection and data security. It is now up to us (the next generations) to take responsibility and make this digital world safe for everyone. The speaker assumes that we will lose many companies in the next few years because they are simply missing the boat.
