Shipwreck or change of course for the liberal order: The International Liberal Order is a project that intended to harmonize state sovereignty and the market economy, through the promotion of liberal democracy at home and support for economic and commercial cooperation at the international level. Since the 1980s, the OLI has been hijacked and the power of the market has obscured the strength of democracy. The goal of protecting national societies from the shocks of war and financial crises has been overturned in the fanatical defense of the global market from social pressures. The imbalance caused by the pandemic, global warming, rampant inequality, the rise of authoritarian powers, the drama of migration and the ongoing terrorist threat are challenges that we can only overcome on condition of finding a different balance between cooperation and competition, to make our democracies solid, inclusive, fair and attractive. The place of war: After almost eighty years, war has reappeared on the Old Continent. The reckless aggression that Vladimir Putin unleashed against Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has shattered decades of peace and caused Europe to return to being what it had always been for centuries until the end of the Second World War: 'the place of war'. How could such a massacre happen in 'civilised Europe'? In the place that represented a pillar of that liberal order that transformed the international system by gathering around itself a family of brotherly democracies and weaving a dense network of institutions and treaties guaranteeing cooperation and peace? If peace, therefore, has been shattered precisely where the conditions for maintaining it were the best possible, what hope remains to prevent force from once again becoming the only 'rule of the world'? The answer to this question passes through the awareness that the possibility of excluding war as a prospect derives precisely from the credibility and survival of that liberal order that Putin's war has put under attack...
