The Hall of Fame of world history is densely populated by successful generals and bold conquerors. But where there are winners, losers are not far away: megalomaniac battle failures, hesitant war heroes and hapless admirals who failed on the battlefields of history. Here are three unsuccessful conquerors for you. First there is Alonso Pérez de Guzmán. He involuntarily becomes an unsuccessful conqueror. When King Philip II of Spain decides to attack Elizabeth's England in 1588, he appoints Guzmán as commander of his huge armada. The new admiral has no nautical skills whatsoever. The armada suffers a crushing defeat both militarily and due to the weather. August the Strong, Elector of Saxony, is known for developing Dresden into a magnificent baroque city. But his military ventures are unsuccessful. He does win the Polish crown. His attempt to found a strong Central European empire failed. The fact that Hannibal crossed the Alps with war elephants in 218 BC and then defeated the Romans at Cannae brought him much fame. The general of Carthage is still considered a military genius today. But ultimately his only place in history is as the man who almost defeated Rome. //Chapter// 00:00 3 unsuccessful conquerors 00:28 Alonso Pérez de Guzmán 04:57 Augustus the Strong 10:46 Hannibal //Team// Author: Christoph Warneck Editing: Patrick Pardella Graphics: Moritz Waidelich This video is a ZDF production in cooperation with ZDF Digital. #TerraX #hannibal #armada Subscribe?
