Mixing kick drum and bass is going to be one of the most difficult challenges you'll face as a sound engineer. Both elements share a wide frequency range and you'll easily have the typical poor demo masking all over your low end. Before I show you the 3 methods you have to adjust the volume, for that there's a little tip or trick in the video tutorial that will serve as a reference. If your kick drum sounds bad (it's not in tune, it has old heads and the drummer is bad) and the bass sounds bad (bad bass player, old strings and it doesn't follow the kick drum) neither these 3 methods nor any other will make them sound good. If you find yourself in that situation you might be interested in checking out the video on Replacing Drums that I wrote recently. And as for the bass sound... good luck with that, I'm not going to tell you that there are studio musicians you can hire, you're just starting out and that's what there is; but part of your job is to insist on the importance of new strings every time you record. If in the end it turns out too bright you can take away the highs, but you can never give brilliance to something that doesn't have it.
