We sailed for 3 days along the Amazon River, from Belém do Pará to Santarém, and what we saw at the back of Marajó Island shocked us. After crossing Brazil by hitchhiking with a truck from São Paulo to Belem do Pará, we visited Belém and the island of Marajó and then left for 3 days by boat towards Santarém. Being able to travel the way the locals do, with large boats on day trips along the Amazon River, was a unique and incredibly enriching experience. We were able to see up close how thousands of people live across the entire bank of the Amazon River, and we saw a harsh reality near the city of Briefs on the back of the island of Marajó. Where people live completely forgotten and depend on donations from people who pass by in boats and throw donations into the water in bags, to help the most needy families, among other sad scenes in one of the richest states in our country. We were able to stop in some cities along the way, where people and goods were getting on and off the boat and getting to know, in addition to the life of riverside dwellers and buildings on stilts, the gigantic and wonderful nature of the Amazon rainforest. And with no money and no perspective, we felt a very strong call that we should go backpacking even without money, working along the way and also doing trekking, this experience that lasted 1 year was incredible! It was such a transformative trip, that when we returned we sold the car we had and built a super low-cost motorhome. We lived in our motorhome for 5 years, and now we left the van parked and embarked on a backpacking trip through the Brazilian Amazon.
