I participated in the 2nd Mito Kaido Journey Run. I had known about the event since last year, and was planning to enter the prestigious first event. However, I was diagnosed with cancer and had to give up due to surgery... This time, I participated after a year, and with the intention of "Mito samurai going to their home country", I was able to experience the history and culture of the Mito Kaido and have a fun journey run. Journey runs are the best! I hope that this video will convey at least a little of the fun and excitement of journey runs... The Mito Tokugawa family, who served as assistants to the shogun, were based in Edo, so they basically did not have sankin-kotai, but it seems that their retainers frequently traveled between Edo and Mito. In addition, as many as 23 daimyo families used this route for sankin-kotai, it is said that it became an important main road connecting Edo and Mito, second only to the Five Highways (Tokaido, Nakasendo, Nikko Kaido, Oshu Kaido, and Koshu Kaido). That historic road is the Mito Kaido (called the Edo Kaido on the Mito side), which starts at Senju and passes through Matsudo, Toride, Tsuchiura, and other places before reaching the Mito domain. We decided to explore the history of the Mito Kaido, which still retains traces of its past in many places. "Samurai of the Mito domain head to their homeland." #MitoKaidoJourneyRun #MitoKaido #JourneyRun #UltraMarathon #SportsAidJapan
