Residence of Sarah Pardee Winchester, widow of the gunsmith industrialist William Wirt Winchester, it was built in 1884, and from then on continuously expanded for 38 years, until 1922. It is considered one of the most haunted houses in the world and certainly the most haunted in the United States of America. Sarah Pardee had married the son of the founder of the famous gun factory Winchester Repeating Arms Company, with whom she had a daughter, Annie, who died prematurely in 1866; in 1881 her husband William also died of tuberculosis. Grieving and depressed by these two great losses, and believing that a curse had fallen on her family, Sarah consulted a medium who told her that she must leave her home in New Haven and go west to build a great house for herself and all the spirits of the Winchester rifle victims, predicting that she would live as long as she continued to build her house. The Winchester widow inherited more than $20 million and a 50% interest in the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, with a daily income of one thousand dollars, estimated in 2013 to be about $25,000 per day. This enormous amount of money gave her the ability to build and continually build the great house. Work began in 1884 and under the constant guidance of Sarah Winchester, work continued daily, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for 38 years, until September 5, 1922, when Sarah died of natural causes.
