Freight transport by rail has huge potential that can be expanded. Almost 70 percent of all goods are still transported by truck. However, a freight train can replace up to 52 trucks. This saves around 80 percent of CO2 and relieves the burden on the roads. You can also find this and other documentaries in the ARD Mediathek: https://www.ardmediathek.de/dokus In Rostock's overseas port, goods are loaded from ships onto the railway. Truck trailers roll off the ferry and are placed directly on the train by crane, are driven through Germany in an environmentally friendly way and only the last few kilometers are moved by truck. To make this work, many people work around the clock: shunters, train drivers, signalmen, logistics experts. They bring the wagons from the port to the freight station. There they are put together to form trains that transport the goods across the country. In order to exploit the enormous potential, the rail network must be made fit. At Rostock's freight station, tracks, signals and overhead lines are currently being completely renovated. New electronic signal boxes are also being installed. Digital control allows more and longer trains to run. The goal: to double freight transport by rail by 2030. More information: https://www.ndr.de/fernsehen/sendunge...
