Metadata is a qualifier external to the file to which it is incorporated, whether text, audio, video, image, plan, etc. According to Royal Decree 1708/2011 "Metadata is understood to be any standardized description of the characteristics of a data set. In the context of an electronic document, any type of information in electronic form associated with electronic documents, of an instrumental nature and independent of their content, intended for the immediate and automatable knowledge of any of their characteristics, in order to guarantee the availability, access, conservation and interoperability of the document itself”.
