We have been announcing an episode about healthcare for a long time, until events finally forced us to do it: on December 4 in the morning, Luigi Mangione shot and killed Brian Thompson, the head of UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurance company in the United States, in Manhattan. Support us at ➡︎ https://patronite.pl/podkastamerykanski The perpetrator left a short manifesto: he pointed out that the US spends the most on healthcare per capita in the world, and yet it ranks 42nd in terms of life expectancy. He called insurance companies parasites that exploit people in order to reap huge profits. Instead of a wave of sympathy for the deceased, "Luigimania" broke out: Mangione became an object of adoration, the subject of gadgets, ballads, even erotic fantasies, money is being raised for his defense, he was even hailed as "Saint Luigi", a defender of patients oppressed by greedy corporations. But if Mangione were not white, young and handsome, would the reactions be the same? What do these reactions tell us about American society, and why are Americans so frustrated and angry at their insurers? We start with the story of Brian Thompson and Luigi Mangione to tell the story of the crisis in American healthcare—or rather, the American insurance industry.
