Covert narcissists are recognized too late. Narcissism has a wide spectrum of forms, which includes a variety of characteristics. Hidden or covert narcissism is one form of it. Covert narcissists do not present the grandiosity and sense of arrogance that are so typical of grandiose narcissists. Instead, they can appear shy or modest, although pronounced narcissistic personality tendencies are present. They are harder to recognize. They have learned to suppress their impulses or to act differently on the outside. In return, they pretend to be their best colleagues and even friends: selfless, reserved, modest and generous. Inwardly, covert narcissists see themselves as victims, unrecognized gifts from the gods. They want admiration without their longing being too obvious. The danger of such people is often only recognized very late. By then, they have already caused a lot of damage.
