The city is special in many ways, it used to be, and with TramTrain the entire transport system has become a real curiosity. Now, a new railway line section is being built on the outskirts of the city, a delta track, which provides a direct connection from Budapest, Kecskemét, towards Röszke, Subotica, and Serbia. The track section itself is perhaps 1.4 km long, but it will be of enormous importance from a network perspective. If it is handed over, freight trains will no longer have to enter the Szeged marshalling yard to change direction, which will save a significant amount of time and perhaps make the railway in this direction a little more competitive. The construction of the delta track is progressing quite nicely, the superstructure is essentially complete, the overhead line system and the safety equipment are still to be completed, but it will definitely be put into service this year, i.e. in 2025. However, there is already regular passenger train traffic from Szabadka to Szeged, for now with Serbian and Hungarian Usgyik, since the overhead line is finished, but it is not yet under voltage. The single-car Szilis passenger trains towards Kiskunfélegyháza and Kecskemét are just a sweet addition, convincing people that they really need to go to Szeged much more often, and I am now trying to keep this up on a monthly basis!
