This lecture is about the Korean Peninsula, which is in a serious position in terms of geopolitics, which has been in a crisis whenever there were signs of change or replacement of power between the surrounding great powers. This is because it has been forced to 'stand in line' and 'choose' between the existing hegemon and the rising challenger. In fact, the Imjin War, Byeongja War, Sino-Japanese War, and Russo-Japanese War all occurred in the same context. Then, what do we need to protect our self-respect and prosperity in the midst of the turbulent US-China hegemony competition that is intensifying today? This lecture was planned with this very problem in mind, to reflect on history and seek wisdom and solutions. Specifically, we will explore the lessons needed today through the actions and leadership of Choi Myeong-gil (1586-1647), who struggled to protect the survival of the country in the midst of the turbulent Byeongja War and the Ming-Qing Treaty Exchange in the early 17th century.
