Live broadcast on TVE of the 20th stage between San Lorenzo del Escorial and Cercedilla on September 12 with a 175.5km route. The mountain passes of the Sierra de Guadarrama knocked out Tom Dumoulin, who will not even be on the podium in Madrid. Fabio Aru will be crowned this Sunday in front of the Puerta de Alcalá as the winner of the 2015 Vuelta a España. The 25-year-old Italian will thus win his first major Vuelta, after having been second and third in the Giro d'Italia. The Astana team, led by Mikel Landa, knocked out the Dutchman on the second pass through Morcuera, who suffered alone and without any support during the remaining 49 kilometers. Purito Rodríguez (2nd) and Rafal Majka (3rd) will complete the podium. The stage was won by Rubén Plaza with a spectacular solo ride. Astana set a hellish pace on the Morcuera from the Guadalix de la Sierra side, the third and hardest climb (17 km at 5.3%) of the four climbed in the stage. Dumoulin was left behind, but tried not to get carried away and opted to regulate his strength, as he had done in previous days. Landa pushed furiously, to the point that Fabio Aru made him slow down. The Dutchman linked up with the favourites, but did not have time to recover, because another Astana push was decisive. Dumoulin crossed the summit 15 seconds behind his rivals. There was still hope if he managed to link up on the descent. Ahead of him was a sextet made up of Aru, Landa, Nairo Quintana, Rafal Majka, Purito Rodríguez and Esteban Chaves. The red jersey was regaining strength on the descent, while Mikel Nieve caught up with him. A minimal help. Dumoulin looked shaken, but he still gave his all to save the Vuelta a España. He was within a dozen seconds of the lead, until the crucial moment of the day arrived. Two breakaway riders, Luis León Sánchez and Andrey Zeits, took the lead of the group and pushed hard. The gap increased cruelly and was soon over a minute. Tom, crestfallen, knew that he had just lost the race. 1st Rubén Plaza LAM 4h 37:05 2nd José Gonçalves CJR + 01:07 3rd Alessandro De Marchi BMC+ 01:08 4th Romain Sicard EUC + 01:29 5th Amaël Moinard BMC + 01:30 6th Carlos Verona EQS + 01:30 7th Sergio Henao SKY + 8th Kenny Elissonde FDJ + 01:35 9th Matteo Montaguti ALM + 01:43 10th Moreno Moser TCG + 02:40
