In 1957, the Reichsbahn began an extensive reconstruction program for steam locomotives. Starting with the 50 series, six other series were rebuilt or modernized. All machines received new boilers and were fundamentally overhauled. The sub-series 01.5, 50.35, 52.80, 58.30 and the 22 series were created.
