You know what they say when the odds of something happening are really low? “It’s like winning the lottery.” But what if I told you that there was a man who managed to win the lottery 14 times in a row over the course of 30 years? Although such luck seems incredible, this is the true story of a mathematical genius, Stefan Mandel. It all started in the 1960s. A poor Romanian accountant was barely making ends meet because his salary was so low, only $88 a month. So he came up with an idea: make money on the lottery. He spent all his free time analyzing mathematical problems and developing his own algorithm. And in the end, it worked! A poor Romanian accountant was struggling to make ends meet and could barely feed his family. So he came up with an idea: make money playing the lottery. Mandel claimed that in a lottery with 6 winning numbers, he could match 5. He won the first prize of $19,000, paid back everyone who helped him, and even made a sizable profit of $4,000. As an Australian citizen, Mandel had access to the resources of the Commonwealth Realms and could play the British lottery, which was much simpler than the Romanian one. His plan consisted of six steps. First, he would calculate the number of combinations in the lottery he was choosing. Second, Mandel would choose a lottery with a jackpot at least three times the number of combinations. Third, he would need to raise money to buy tickets with every possible combination. Fourth, he would have to print out literally millions of tickets. Fifth, after printing the tickets, he had to deliver them to the official dealers. And finally, the sixth step was to collect the prize. Over the years, he managed to create what was called a lottery syndicate - a group of hundreds of investors who believed in his method and put money into it. The moment of truth came on February 15, 1992. The lottery syndicate took not only the Jackpot, but also the second and third prizes, as well as dozens of smaller prizes. In total, their winnings amounted to $ 30 million. In 2004, he received a 20-month sentence in an Israeli prison when he tried to repeat his lottery trick and lost. This must have had a big impact on him, because since his release in 2006, he has been living a quiet life on a tropical island off the coast of Australia.
