Their engagement began after they met in high school, in Virginia. Their relationship was initially not seen favorably by Louise's parents, since she was very young. However, they got married, as soon as Louise turned 16. David was 23. They are a happy couple, and they take their first house in Fort Worth, Texas. In the eyes of everyone, the Turpins' life is comfortable, successful and wonderful. Their relatives received photos of a family that was always happy, often out of town on expensive trips... in short, Louise found a husband with whom she could spend the rest of her life peacefully, and what's more, in comfort. Soon, however, David decided to open his own private school inside their large house. The school was called Sandcastle Day School and the lessons were taught privately by Louise, while the director was David himself. The motivation that pushed the two parents to open a private school in their home, according to them, was the fear that their children would be bullied.. and they were generally worried and apprehensive about letting them go out alone. It is the morning of January 14, 2018, very early, the sun has not yet risen. The 911 switchboard receives a call from Perris. The officer answers. On the other end of the phone is a frightened, awkward voice that speaks in a rather ungrammatical way. He doesn't know exactly where he is, he can't immediately give his precise address, he says it's the first time he's left the house and that he's speaking on a phone. The voice belongs to Jordan Turpin, 17 years old. The girl went out of a window, without being seen, and took a phone with her. She is terrified of being discovered, she admits to the officer who is listening to her, that if her parents found out she left the house, they would kill her. This phone call on the edge of reality goes on for 20 minutes. Jordan says that there are 15 people living in her house, and that at that precise moment two of her younger sisters and one of her brothers are tied to the bed, handcuffed, for having taken food from the house. The officer is shocked, and while she continues to talk to Jordan, she sends a colleague to the scene. When he and some backup find Jordan, she is visibly terrified, and shows on the phone that she is holding some photos of her sisters handcuffed to the bed, to prove that she was telling the truth... since the officer in front of her was struggling to believe the absurd stories that Jordan was telling. Upon seeing the photos, the police decide to knock on Turpin's house. They wear cameras. What they will see and film inside is surreal. There are piles of garbage everywhere, dead cats and mice running around. The house is full of spoiled food scraps thrown on the carpet, the air is unbreathable. The floor is covered in feces and other types of filth. In the children's bedrooms, there are ropes, chains and handcuffs tied to every single bed.
