This sura, consisting of one hundred and twenty-three verses, was revealed in Mecca. This sura also states that the essence and truth of Islamic belief is to believe in Allah alone, the prophets He sent, and the truth of the religions they brought, and to believe that one will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment and will be rewarded and punished according to all the good and bad deeds one has done in this world. This Surah narrates the stories of Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot, Shu'ayb, Moses and other prophets in great detail. The purpose of this is, firstly, to inform all believers about the prophets who passed away and the people who were destroyed because they rejected them. Second, to comfort Muhammad, who had recently been separated from his two dear ones - his uncle Abu Talib and his wife Khadijah - and was constantly being persecuted by the polytheists of Mecca, by describing the lives of his predecessors and the hardships they endured in their call to the Truth. This Surah begins by describing the Holy Quran as a divine Book that is free from defects and whose content and essence can never be tampered with by anyone, and ends by explaining the wisdom of Allah Almighty in sending prophets to His servants. This surah is named after the prophet Hud, who was sent by Allah Almighty to the people of 'Ad.
