10 years of the Good Friday battle in Afghanistan: On April 2, 2010, three German soldiers die when they are ambushed by the Taliban. The battle lasted eight hours, during which the German soldiers fired around 25,000 shots. The soldiers were attacked by dozens of Taliban fighters while searching for booby traps. One of the first to be wounded was Corporal Robert Hartert, who later died of his injuries. While attempting to break away from the enemy, a Dingo vehicle was blown up. Sergeant Major Nils Bruns and Corporal Martin Augustyniak were killed. Almost two weeks later, on April 15, 2010, Major Jörn Radloff, Sergeant Major Marius Dubnicki and Staff Sergeant Josef Otto Kronawitter were killed by a booby trap. On the same day, Chief Medical Officer Thomas Clemens Broer died when his armored vehicle was shot at. On October 7, 2010, Sergeant Florian Pauli was killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up. With eight soldiers killed, 2010 was the year with the highest casualties for the Bundeswehr in Afghanistan.
