Since summer 2023, the X-cars have taken over regular passenger service on the U3 line. In spring 2024, they can also be seen on the U2. They are a further development of their predecessor, the "V-car", although they are a mixed train of the Silver Arrows (U) and the V types. They are being developed by Siemens in Vienna and are technically based on the new Inspiro platform. They were first presented at the Simmering plant in 2019 and at InnoTrans in Berlin in 2022. In 2021, they were already extensively tested in trial operation by a press. Currently, 11 vehicles (3701/02 - 3721/22 except 3711/12) are registered. It was actually planned to go into operation in spring 2022, but was delayed by a year due to various software problems and a lack of infrastructure on the route as well as a lack of training trips, so that they were not allowed to go into operation until June 16, 2023. From (presumably) 2026, the U5 will be the first to run driverless (GoA4 system). PS: In Serfaus, a village in Tyrol, there was already a subway in 2019 and it is the second system in Austria after Vienna, but it is an air cushion cable car and is only referred to as "subway". That is why the Vienna subway remains the only one in the country.
