This year marks 30 years since the twinning of the towns of Tolosa (Gipuzkoa) and Uztaritze (Lapurdi). They have had a close relationship since 1989, and this was demonstrated by the festival held in Uztaritze on October 12. On that day, many cultural groups from both towns took part, including the Udaberri Dantza Taldea and local dance groups. In this video, members of Udaberri perform the Elciegoko Dantzak, a dance series that combines folk culture and religious traditions. Every year, on September 8, it is danced in honor of the Virgin of the Plaza, accompanying the procession and performing dances before the image of the Virgin returns to the hermitage. In the past, in the 17th century, it is said that they danced on Santa Isabel. Later, they were held on the two aforementioned days, but today, as mentioned, they are only danced on September 8, the day of the Virgin. Until the civil war in 1936, the dances were performed by groups made up entirely of men, but after the war ended in the 1940s, the dances were revived by the Women's Section. Since then, although there have also been mixed groups, today they are danced by groups made up of girls. Currently, 8 girls dance under the guidance of a dance leader called a "bastonero". In the past, there were two characters of this type, one "bastonero" or dance leader and the other "Katximorro", a strange character widespread in the area and responsible for teasing people. Today, there is only one character, who only plays the role of dance leader, but dressed as a Katximorro. The dance series consists of 5 dances: Kalejira, Dantza, Lau kale, Arbola and Jota.
