The Laivinieki Brothers – two comedians – coupletists in the 1930s were undoubtedly the most popular in Latvia, and they still have their own circle of admirers today. The Laivinieki Brothers were not actually brothers at all, but became such only on stage. The duet was made up of Liepaja residents – the elder Kārlis Grūbe and the younger Fricis Kuģis. The musical heritage of the Laivinieki Brothers has been preserved on records almost in its entirety. Bellacord has released 25 song pairs, with many records reissued. The performance of the Laivinieki songs is so special, unique, inimitable. Maybe it comes from Bedriņš’s slightly tremulous voice. No one today has been able to fully emulate them.
