Paloteado del Caso Viejo de Tudela, celebrated in Tudela on 30/06/2018, in the Plaza Vieja. PALOTEAO DEL CASCO VIEJO DE TUDELA It was the summer of 1978 when, led by the Erribera Taldea group of dancers, a paloteao was performed in the Casco Viejo de Tudela dedicated to its patron saint, San Pedro. A few years later, at the beginning of the 80s, and on this occasion with Santa Ana as the recipient, the recently created group Muskaria staged a new paloteao, with the Plaza Vieja as the stage. Both performances were one-off. They did not continue. Several people linked to popular culture, traditions and folklore have been mulling over the idea of creating a specific paloteao for the historic area of the capital of Ribera for quite some time. This year, some forty years after those first initiatives, we are going to turn our ambition into reality with the representation, on June 30, of the Paloteao del Casco Viejo. We return to the same stage, the Plaza Vieja, but with an important difference: we have the vocation to stay, to endure over time. The Paloteao del Casco Viejo de Tudela was born with a dynamic spirit. Making a cultural contribution to the neighborhood and the city with the creation and exhibition of new dances of sticks, bows, ribbons and their respective music, is one of our aims. At the same time, through the creation and oral dissemination, in verse, of the texts of the Paloteao, in addition to having a fun time with the respectable, telling anecdotes and jokes, which we all really need to laugh for a while, we want to bring a critical point of view to different situations generated throughout the year, mainly in the social and political spheres. Although it has a general structure similar to all those in the area, the Paloteao of Casco Viejo is unique in some aspects. As it is not dedicated to any saint or virgin, like all the others, it has a laic character. In the choreographic field, it is noteworthy that the dance troupe is made up exclusively of women. And as for the scenery, we must say that, without excluding two essential characters in this type of dance, such as the Mayoral and the Rabadán, we have introduced characteristic elements of our folklore, history and natural environment, such as the Zipotero, Muza (King of the Ebro), the Cierzo and the Bardena. We hope you enjoy this first performance of the Paloteao of Casco Viejo.
