The highest mountains besides Mount La Meta are Mount Petroso (2,249 m above sea level), Mount Tartaro 2,191 m above sea level and Mount Altare 2,146 m above sea level. On average, they show visible traces of Quaternary glaciation and in the valleys the waters of the Melfa and Mollarino rivers in the province of Frosinone and of the Rio Torto in the province of L'Aquila rise abundantly. From the peaks the view extends over all the Marsicani Mountains, the Maiella and the Matese Mountains. The lowest reliefs of the same massif, on the border between Lazio and Molise are historically called Mainarde; they are the mountains where the presence of man, due to the less rigid climate, was sedentary (dwellings and crops at high altitude) and not seasonal and pastoral as for the Monti della Meta. A precise geological border between the two mountain ranges is not defined: it is only certain that the Mainarde do not fall within the regional territory of Abruzzo, but many believe them to be in Molise. The traditional use of the oronym is repeated in the maps of the Military Geographic Institute which applies it to the outermost reliefs of the Meta Mountains, those that from Monte Cavallo and Monte Mare progressively slope down towards Vallerotonda (FR) and the valley of the Rapido-Gari river and towards Scapoli (IS) and Cerasuolo (IS), Castelnuovo and the valley of the Volturno river which rises there. Sector Mainarde is the name that the administrations of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park give to the part of the reserve's territory in the province of Isernia, which includes the territories of Castel San Vincenzo, Pizzone, Rocchetta al Volturno, Scapoli, included in 1990 by DPR. The etymology is obscure, it seems to recall a Germanic proper name.
