WHAT DO HYPOTHESIS TESTS DO? We will assume a hypothetical value for a population parameter, and based on the sample information we will perform a statistical test to accept or reject the hypothetical value. Since the decision to accept or reject the hypothesis will be made according to elements of a sample, it is clear that the decision will be subject to errors. We will be making decisions under conditions of uncertainty and, therefore, subject to error. Based on the results obtained in a sample, it is not possible to make decisions that are definitely correct. However, as we will see later, we can measure the probability (risk) of the decision to accept or reject a statistical hypothesis. WHAT ARE HYPOTHESIS TESTS? It is a decision rule to accept or reject a statistical hypothesis based on sample elements. To test a population parameter, we must carefully state a pair of hypotheses: one that represents the statement and another that represents its complement. When one of these hypotheses is false, the other must be true.
